Wetherspoons – The Shining Beacon Of Hope In These Dark Times

The general election party bus has rolled into town blaring its familiar tune of pompous propaganda and false lies. The country is awash with party policies as politics biggest hitters go toe-to-toe with each other over who is the countries biggest liar and who we should entrust to lead our country out of these dark times. The general election is supposed to represent a time of hope, enlightenment, excitement and change, except it doesn’t. Instead, what we are getting is a rundown of everything that makes our country crap: How shit our economy is, how our healthcare is suffering, how a growing number of people hate immigrants despite the obvious benefits they bring to society and arguably the most depressing of all, how one dimensional and monotone our countries politicians are. However, there is one place in this country that represents all that is good about Britain, it’s a place where we are all accepted no matter what your background, a place where you can step away from the madness going on outside and simply just unwind, that place Ladies and Gentlemen is Wetherspoons.

Wetherspoons is a stalwart of contemporary British society, a place of familiarity and belonging. It acts as a place for celebration for many, as well as a shoulder to lean on in the moments of deep despair. Wetherspoons embraces is all that is great about Britain. Everyone is welcome, from those 9am pint drinkers, to the group of lads ready for a night out in Venue backing 4 Jagers for a tenner – there is no prejudice when it comes to a spoons turnout. See, politics could learn a thing or two from Wetherspoons. The menu is vast and spans across a variety of different cultures, unlike the house of commons, with Thursdays Curry Club being a prime example of this. Spoons recognises the economic limitations of the common man/student with the drink prices staying low rather than pricing everyone out.  Not only do the cheap drinks keep us coming back for more, but they also keep other pubs in check. The price of drinking in London is ridiculous, but if it wasn’t for Wetherspoons it would be astronomical. Spoons lay the foundation of what a pint should cost, if it wasn’t here our countries drinking prices would be a free for all and out of control. We owe it a lot more than we think. It even chucks in one tax-free day a year as a token of good gesture to the people of Britain, you can’t say the same about our government.

Spoons is a familiar face in unfamiliar landscapes. Whatever city/town/village you’re visiting, the likelihood is you and your mates will go for a pint in Spoons if you see one. I’ve drank in a variety of Spoons from Cambridge to Chichester, Camden and Portsmouth as I know what they’re going to deliver. It’s there to see you off on holiday, bid you farewell and wish you a safe flight and it’ll welcome you home with open arms upon your return. It’s celebrated good exam results with you and been there when you’ve underperformed. It’s enjoyed paydays, birthdays, date nights, work socials and your first ever drink without you even noticing it. It’s the best friend we all wish for without realising we’ve got it. Spoons is always there, by your side, a pint in hand and a smile on it’s face waiting to be called upon.

People say Russell Brand is one of the best political thinkers of our generation, but is he? Yes, he has a lot to say and an incredibly eloquent way of saying it, but isn’t politics sometimes best laid down in layman’s terms? Spoons delivers everything we want to see. It delivers everything we love. If Wetherspoons was a political party, we would all vote for it. Next time you’re in Spoons drinking your pint from its ever growing local beer selection and eating your burger with its strange, liquid cheese – just sit and take a minute. Look around, what do you see? You see Britain. You see everything that is great about this country, everything we need to be but we’re not. You see a revolution.  It’s the hero Britain deserves, and the one it needs right now. Tim Martin wherever you are, the country salutes you.

  1. I could not agree more with everything said in this post. If anything the author has not gone far enough to praise these little oases (I had to look up the plural of oasis) of sanity in a mad world.
